Porter and AKG job coach Lewis

Porter joined our Inclusive Employment Australia program as a recent high school leaver with no previous work experience. Like many young people taking their first steps after school, he wasn’t yet sure what to expect in a workplace or what kind of role might suit him.

That’s why his Job Coach, Lewis, recommended an Observational Work Experience placement.

For Porter, this was an important first step. Observational Work Experience gave him the chance to see a real workplace in action, understand day-to-day expectations, build confidence, and learn about the behaviours and routines that help people succeed at work — all in a supported environment.

Lewis also encouraged Porter to think about the connections he already had. Porter mentioned that his dad worked for a car detailing company, so Lewis supported him to reach out and explore whether an introduction to the employer might be possible.

The employer agreed to host Porter for an Observational Work Experience placement. Before it began, Lewis visited the workplace to complete a risk assessment and speak with the employer about the support available to both Porter and the business.

Through Observational Work Experience, young people like Porter could:

  • Observe workplace routines
  • Understand employer expectations
  • Build confidence
  • Explore possible career options
  • Connect with the broader community

Porter completed a four-week placement.

At first, there was no job offer.

But Lewis didn’t leave it there. He continued to follow up with the employer, keeping the conversation open and advocating for Porter’s potential. That persistence made all the difference.

Eventually, the employer came back with an exciting opportunity: Porter was invited to officially join the team.

Now, Porter is working alongside his dad. He has told us he’s grateful not only for the chance to enter the workforce, but also for the opportunity to reconnect with his father.

We’re proud to continue supporting Porter as he builds confidence, skills and experience in the early stages of his career.
