How a Job Coach Helped Jack Land Not Just One, But Two Jobs

Job searching is often reduced to a checklist: update your resume, scan job boards, submit applications, wait. But this transactional view misses what determines whether a job search succeeds or stalls. A successful job search is built on strategy, self-presentation, and navigating the parts of the process that aren’t written in any job ad — the unspoken social dynamics, the confidence to network, and the resilience to keep going after setbacks.

This is where a Job Coach makes the difference. At AKG, our Job Coaches work alongside jobseekers to build both the practical and personal skills needed for lasting employment. Many bring backgrounds in counselling, psychology, and lived experience with disability, giving them insight not just into the mechanics of finding work, but into the real challenges jobseekers face along the way.

Jack, 26, is neurodivergent. His experience with Job Coach Ruben through our Inclusive Employment Australia program, is one example of what that support looks like in practice.

Jack’s Job Search Challenge: A Narrow Focus with No Momentum

Jack was eager to find work, but his job search had a blind spot. He was only applying to big-name companies, only within the industry he’d studied, and only through online job boards. Understandable — but narrow. And it wasn’t leading anywhere.

That changed when Jack joined AKG’s Inclusive Employment Australia program and started working with Job Coach Ruben.

How Job Coaching Widened Jack’s Search Strategy

Ruben worked alongside Jack to expand his search, encouraging him to also consider entry-level roles outside his field while still pursuing the industry he’d trained in. Together, they tailored his resume and cover letter for each application, and Ruben taught him how to follow up with employers and build professional connections.

The real turning point, though, had little to do with resumes or cover letters.

Building Confidence in Workplace Social Skills

This is where Ruben’s background in counselling and psychology mattered. He noticed Jack found the social side of professional settings didn’t come naturally. Ruben coached him on the small talk, self-introductions, and informal moments that often matter as much as the interview itself.

Ruben began taking Jack to meet employers directly. In the early days, Ruben handled the introductions and pitched Jack himself. Slowly, that responsibility shifted, and Jack started introducing himself and leading the conversations on his own.

After every meeting, they’d debrief — what went well, what could improve next time.

“Jack stayed open to feedback and applied what he learned. I knew it was only a matter of time before he would be successful in finding work,” Ruben says.

The Result: Two Job Offers, One Turning Point

Jack exceeded expectations by landing not one, but two roles: one as a social media marketer, and another in customer service at a carwash.

Two very different jobs. Both a sign that with the right support, Jack could discover how capable and adaptable he really is.
