If you’re job hunting, you don’t have to do it alone.

There’s a free, in-person course that helps you build a stronger resume, understand what employers are actually looking for, and explore industries you might not have considered — while also counting as an approved activity toward your mutual obligation requirements. It’s called Employability Skills Training (EST), and it runs in small groups over three weeks.

Hear from people who’ve done it

As part of EST, you’ll hear directly from industry guest speakers to gain insights about the local labour market. Rob, one of our participants from Ballarat, is now pursuing a traineeship in real estate after connecting with one of the industry speakers we organised. Kat, another participant, is now looking at a traineeship in beauty after hearing about it from guest speakers.

They also talk about what made that possible: everyone started out nervous, not knowing anyone in the room — and if that’s you right now, you’re not the exception. As our facilitator Andrea puts it, “there’s going to be a lot of people who are going to be in the same situation coming in.”

Being face to face with others going through the same thing is what many participants credit for helping them improve their resumes and prepare for interviews faster than they expected.

Why it’s worth your time

  • It’s free for eligible job seekers
  • It counts toward your mutual obligation requirements — and can earn points toward your Points Based Activation System target
  • Working face to face with others helps in ways solo prep doesn’t — participants describe it improving their interview answers and resume writing simply from being able to lean on the group
  • Guest speakers can open doors you didn’t know were there — past participants have come out of these sessions with real leads into traineeships in industries they hadn’t previously considered
  • You’re not the first person to feel nervous about it — most people start not knowing anyone in the room; that changes fast
