Good morale in an organisation is linked directly to adaptability, innovation, engagement, resilience and lower stress.1 Teams with high morale, outperform those with low morale. They also have better psychological safety, retention and wellbeing.2
Moral is defined by researchers as employees’ collective sense of confidence, enthusiasm and satisfaction at the workplace1.
Given that employee morale significantly influences a range of important workplace outcomes, it’s important to understands what contributes to good morale. The best contributors to good morale includes supportive leadership (e.g., empathy, approachability, support, role modelling behaviours, delegation and proactive engagement with at-risk staff) and a positive and engaging workgroup climate.
This means that the higher the level of transformational leadership will increase employee morale in the organization, conversely the lower the transformational leadership will decrease employee morale. The findings in this study indicate that the employee relations can improve employee morale. High employee morale can be created when a good relationship exists and there is cohesiveness between employees with their leaders and between employees and fellow colleagues.3
Leaders can boost morale by consistently showing appreciation, communicating transparently, and empowering employees through trust and flexibility. Key strategies include celebrating small wins, providing opportunities for professional growth, encouraging work-life balance, and fostering a psychologically safe environment.5
A psychologically safe environment is one where mistakes are treated as learning opportunities, where employees feel safe to speak up and take risks4.
How to increase employee morale
Practical examples for leaders to boost morale include5:
- be approachable and responsive when dealing with staff concerns
- demonstrate an understanding of the issues faced by their staff
- clarify work expectations, objectives and priorities
- actively seek staff involvement in decisions
- provide opportunities and encourage staff to work collaboratively with others
- delegate and encourage staff to take initiative
- be reliable under pressure
- support staff when things go wrong
- provide frequent informal development-oriented feedback
- treat people with consideration and respect and encourage team members to do the same; and
- be fair and equitable in dealings with staff
