Finding work when your housing isn’t stable

Homelessness or unstable housing can make finding and keeping a job much harder. See how AKG connects you with housing, health and wellbeing support, one step at a time.

When everything feels harder

When you don’t know where you’ll be sleeping next week, it’s hard to think about anything else. Job applications, interviews and shifts all get harder when your housing isn’t stable.

That isn’t a personal failing. It’s a lot to carry, and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. The good news is you don’t have to work it all out on your own.

Why stability comes first

Homelessness affects both sides of work. It makes it harder to find a job, and harder to keep one once you start.

That’s why we don’t jump straight to the job search. We start with what you need to feel more settled, then build from there. A steady base makes every next step easier.

Support that works together

At AKG, we connect you with community organisations that help with housing. We can also help you find the other support you might need, like:

  • a new GP
  • mental health support
  • drug and alcohol support

You won’t be handed a list of phone numbers and left to it. Your Job Coach and our health team work together, so the support around you is joined up. That means less chasing and fewer forms to fill in on your own.

“Sometimes people just need that guidance or that extra assistance, because a lot of the time they’re quite overwhelmed.” – Katie, AKG Allied Health Clinician

One step at a time

When there’s a lot going on, it helps to have someone break it down with you. Here’s what working with AKG can look like:

  1. Talk to us about what’s going on. There’s no need to have everything figured out. We start with where you are right now.
  1. Work out what matters most first. For many people, that’s somewhere stable to live. We’ll help you decide where to start.
  1. Get connected. We link you with local organisations for housing, health or other support, and help you take those first steps.
  1. Keep someone by your side. We stay with you while you work through each step, and keep supporting you as you move towards work.
