Starting a new job is a big step. Here’s the support that should come with it

Starting a new job after time out of work is a big step. See how AKG’s Employment Health Services team helps you build confidence and feel ready for day one, and how to choose your provider.

Why the first day can feel so big

You’ve done the hard part. You applied, you interviewed, and you got the job. So why does starting feel so daunting?

Because it is a big step. A new workplace means new faces, new routines and a lot to learn all at once. It takes concentration, and it takes confidence. If you’ve been out of work for a while, those first few weeks can feel even bigger.

That feeling is normal. And it’s exactly why the support you get shouldn’t stop the moment you’re offered a job.

You can choose your employment provider

You have a say in which employment services provider supports you. It’s worth asking each one a simple question: what happens after I get the job?

Here’s what good support looks like:

  • Help that looks at the whole person. Finding work is about more than your resume. Your health, wellbeing and confidence matter too.
  • People with the right skills. Not just someone to help with job applications, but people trained to help you manage stress, nerves and big changes.
  • Support that builds on what already works for you. You’ve got through tough times before. Good support starts there.
  • Someone still in your corner after you start. The first weeks in a new job are when support can make the biggest difference.

Health and wellbeing support, built in

At AKG, our health team works alongside your Job Coach. The team includes psychologists, counsellors, exercise physiologists and social workers. Together, they help you build the tools, strategies and confidence to start work and keep going.

It starts with you. We look at the ways you’ve coped with challenges in the past, then help you build on them. And we remind you of something easy to forget when nerves kick in: you earned this job.

Hear from one of our team about how they help people get ready for day one.

“That employer must have seen something in them … they believe that this person can do the role.” – Katie, AKG Allied Health Clinician

Getting the job is proof of what you can do. Our team helps you walk in the door believing it.

Support that stays with you

Starting work isn’t the finish line. It’s the start of something new, and new things take time to settle into. Our team keeps working with you as you find your feet, so you’re not doing it on your own.
