Since 2018, AKG has supported 1,362 people to start meaningful work with Coles Australia through the programs we deliver.
Behind that number is a simple belief: inclusive employment thrives when an employer is willing to open the door, and a dedicated employment partner is there to support everyone through it.
Jessica Dewan (AKG Business Manager – Employer Partnerships) explains that the partnership is centred on creating inclusive opportunities and accessible experiences for candidates. That includes flexible recruitment adjustments and extra support where it’s needed.
“We take the time to really understand our candidates – their strengths, their goals and their support needs – and help them understand what the day-to-day of a job looks like. It’s about giving candidates the opportunity to see their strengths and understand how those strengths can relate to the role they’re applying for,” Jessica says.
“Through our partnership, we’re able to share a talent pool that reflects the local community, while working with Coles to make sure we’re creating the right experience and support around candidates. It’s really about finding the right fit for the candidate, while giving Coles people who are ready to grow with them.”
Beyond the interview
A traditional interview doesn’t always show what someone can do. Some of the most capable people don’t interview well, whether because of nerves, disability, limited work history or unfamiliar processes.
That’s why we focus on giving candidates the chance to demonstrate their skills, not just talk about them. Often it’s small adjustments that make the difference.
For example, when Frankie, one of our customers, was applying for a position to Coles, they provided him with the opportunity to show them what he could do instead of a typical sit-down interview. This was an effective way for Frankie, who is neurodivergent, to demonstrate the value he could bring to Coles.
These changes are simple for an employer to make, and they can unlock great talent that might otherwise be overlooked.
Getting the match right
We focus on the right person, in the right role, at the right store, with the right hours. That clarity from the start helps people feel prepared and confident. It also helps store teams welcome someone who is genuinely suited to the job.
Support that builds confidence
When Frankie hit a snag during onboarding, we worked with the store manager to sort it out quickly, so Frankie could stay focused on his new role. Joanne, our Partnerships Manager, even attended Frankie’s first shift. She stayed by his side for reassurance and returned to pick him up afterwards.
Moments like this matter. A supportive start builds confidence, and confidence is what helps people stay, settle in and succeed.
Support that continues after day one
Our role doesn’t end once someone starts. We keep working alongside Coles with regular check-ins, early problem-solving when barriers come up, and practical supports that help people sustain work. For store leaders, it means a partner they can call on. For the employee, that means someone in their corner and our support sets them up to succeed.
Growing skills and careers
Inclusive workplaces don’t just offer a job. They help people build confidence, independence and a long-term career.
During quieter seasons in Western Australia, we work with Coles to identify opportunities for team members to build skills in other departments. Employees gain new experience and transferable skills. Coles develops versatile team members who can move across the store as rosters and priorities shift throughout the year. It’s a clear example of inclusive employment benefiting both the person and the business.
Belinda joined the team at Coles Spring Farm with our support and was awarded the store’s inaugural Employee of the Month. Customers love her enthusiasm and the care she brings to every interaction.
When she accepted her award, she summed up her commitment in three words: “I’m a lifer!”
Opportunity plus support
Our partnership with Coles shows what inclusive employment can achieve when an employer is willing to provide opportunity and is backed by a dedicated employment partner.
