In Western Australia, our Workforce Australia and Inclusive Employment Australia teams partnered with Dress for Success WA to provide women seeking employment with professional interview outfits — a simple initiative with a powerful ripple effect.
Workforce Australia is the Australian Government’s primary employment services system, supporting jobseekers to build skills, prepare for work and move into ongoing employment. Inclusive Employment Australia is the Government’s specialist disability employment program, designed to support people with disability, injury or health conditions to find and keep meaningful work. AKG delivers both programs.
Dress for Success WA is the Western Australian affiliate of a global not-for-profit network that provides women with professional attire, styling support and a development community to help them achieve economic independence. Since its founding, the international Dress for Success movement has supported millions of women across more than 20 countries.
Connecting the Right Resources at the Right Time
This partnership reflects our ability to identify and connect the right resources at the right time. Rather than viewing employment support as a single service, we recognised that practical barriers — like not having appropriate interview attire — can be just as significant as skills gaps or lack of experience.
By linking our participants with Dress for Success WA, we brought together specialist community expertise and our own employment services to deliver tailored, real-world support that goes beyond the standard offering.
Understanding Overlapping Barriers
Many of the women we support face multiple, overlapping challenges — financial hardship, low confidence, career gaps, or systemic disadvantage. These barriers rarely exist in isolation, and addressing them requires more than a one-size-fits-all solution.
By prioritising genuine connection first — understanding each woman’s individual circumstances and building trust — our teams were able to respond holistically. The styling sessions weren’t just about clothing; they addressed the emotional and psychological barriers that so often stand between someone and their next opportunity, laying the groundwork for sustainable, long-term outcomes rather than short-term fixes.
