AKG’s Employability Skills Training (EST) is a program designed to sharpen job search skills, core work skills, and industry awareness, helping participants move from uncertainty into stable, sustainable employment. This is the story of Maia, who used the program to trade unpredictable casual work for the consistency she’d been searching for.
Searching for Stability
For Maia, casual work meant unpredictable schedules, unpredictable income, and an unpredictable life. She wanted a job with stability she could plan around.
That’s what brought her to AKG’s Employability Skills Training (EST): a 5-week program designed to sharpen job search skills, core work skills, and industry awareness.
Putting Learning Into Action
Maia didn’t wait until the finish line to put her learning into action. Before the program even wrapped up, she was already applying new strategies to her job applications. By the end of week five, she’d landed an interview—and the job.
Building Confidence and Skills
Along the way, Maia:
- Refined her resume to clearly showcase her skills
- Practiced interview techniques through mock interviews with facilitator Demelza
- Learned to confidently communicate her strengths to employers
“The mock-interview practice helped me become better at succinctly articulating the skills I have to employers,” Maia shares.
Engagement, Even Online
Despite the entire program running online, Maia says it never felt disengaging. This was thanks to Demelza’s ability to foster peer-to-peer interaction, encourage participant input, and offer one-on-one support whenever Maia needed extra help understanding the material.
A New Chapter of Stability
Today, Maia works 30 hours a week in a customer service role—the consistency she’d been looking for, finally within reach.
