AKG delivers the Parent Pathways program: a free and voluntary support service that helps parents and carers work towards their personal, study, or work goals. Participants work with a qualified mentor to access a range of support options, including financial assistance, referrals to health and community services, childcare support, training, career guidance, and language or literacy programs. The service is flexible, allowing people to join, pause, or leave at any time without affecting their payments. This is the story of Ngudu, who used Parent Pathways to turn his caregiving journey and clear career ambition into a role in the security industry.
A Clear Goal Amid Real Responsibilities
When Ngudu first connected with our Parent Pathways program, he was caring for his nephew and a son with disability, and had limited recent work history. However, he had a clear goal: to build a career in security.
Turning a Goal Into Opportunity
Our Parent Pathways team supported Ngudu to turn that goal into meaningful employment by:
- Covering the cost of getting his White Card and Traffic Control certifications
- Connecting him with Precision Training and funding his security licence training
- Supporting him to identify suitable employers and prepare for opportunities
- Advocating on his behalf by pitching him directly to employers
Landing the Job
After becoming qualified, Ngudu attended an interview with Securityworx and impressed them so much that he was offered the job on the same day.
Settling Into a New Career
Ngudu’s been working since June, and we supplied him with work clothing.
