Unpaid volunteer experience can sometimes be the bridge to paid employment that many people need. It can:

  • Rebuild habits of work and restore confidence in ability to work
  • Fill resume gaps with meaningful experience
  • Generate a credible reference after a long break from work
  • Expand networks

For Riley, one of our Workforce Australia participants, this was where we started to prepare him to re-enter the workforce after a long absence. Volunteering at a charity op shop gave him routine, purpose and the quiet confidence that comes from showing up and contributing. Riley also found that having somewhere to be each day boosted his mental health.

Sav (AKG Job Coach) worked with Riley to craft a resume that told an honest story. His volunteering placement was evidence of reliability and initiative. It gave Riley a current, credible referee.

Sav also helped him with cover letters, explore job listings, and hone interview skills. With these tools, Riley was now prepared to re-enter the workforce.

Riley landed a full-time role in October 2025. Sav reflects on his growth:

“He’s a completely different person.”
